So many think that being an effective leader is about telling or directing people what to do. But there is so much more to being an effective leader. It is not so much about directing as it is about extracting. What can you pull out of people? A leader can't be so caught in themselves and their position. You should focus on making new great leaders. How can you encourage those under you and can inspire them to be great leaders. One trait of a great leader is his/her coaching ability. You are able to help that team player discover and develop their skills.
Now there are many attributes that go along with you being a great leader that will help you inspire others. First and foremost, you must be approachable. Your team must feel like they can come and talk to you and get the support and sometimes redirection to help them to grow. You must also be an insightful person as it pertains to others. If you don't have an accurate understanding of someone, how can you lead or inspire them? You must also be good at building high levels of trust. Healthy relationship, whether personal or business, are built on trust. You must also have a clear vision and focus. You must also be a good communicator. Part of being a good communicator is being a good listener. Don't be so quick to do all the talking, you have to step back and learn to listen.
You must also have good decision making abilities. Part of that is also knowing when to delegate and realizing that you can do it all and help is ok. Lastly, you must be empathetic. Empathy allows you to connect with others and build that trusting relationship. In conclusion, it comes down to you being a great example to your followers. Providing them with a guidebook that will assist them with becoming a future great leader.
